Writing about Covid in 2022 – useless or useful?

"Shall we write something about Covid for our blog?" – a question I have been asking regularly by clients since the pandemic hit the news.

I asked my LinkedIn network recently this question: ‘Writing articles about Covid in 2022 – useless or useful?’

And the results were pretty clear!

Now obviously we copywriters love a third ‘grey area’ option, but for this question, there is certainly no clear ‘yes or ‘no’ answer.

Every time I am asked by a copywriting client whether they should consider writing an article I reply with the question "do you have anything truly unique to say?"

Nine times out of 10, the answer will be no and we continue to brainstorm content ideas that will actually deliver something worthwhile for their target audience.

But occasionally there will be a small piece of information that crops up, a throwaway comment that makes me think "hmm, maybe there is something useful here" and then we explore that.

If you're considering writing an article, blog post or social media update about Covid, before you start, ask yourself these questions:

  • Will it ACTUALLY provide value to the reader?

  • Is it relevant and topical for this period of time?

  • Does your brand or company have a 'right' to be discussing this?

Do it right

If you answered the three questions above with a resounding ‘yes’, you might have the beginnings of an article about Covid. Just make sure that your content is reliable, honest and sensitive to the current situation and you could be on your way to producing a relevant and helpful article for your target audience.
