Why you should care about your website copy

Let's get this out in the open – yes, I am a website copywriter, of course I am going to say you need somebody like me to write copy for your website. But I'm also somebody who uses the internet; a person who gets frustrated when I see beautiful websites let down by poor or nonsensical copywriting. I’d want people to care about the words they put on their websites, even if I wasn’t a copywriter!

If you're a business owner looking to improve your online copy, I hope this article goes some way in making a case for why (a) you should hire a copywriter and (b) why you should care about your website copy.

Most of the time, you won't think about copy until your website design is near completion. Often, your developer and designer will be ready to move on to their next projects and want to put your site live ASAP, but you don't have the words to fill in the blanks. At this stage, you really should consider a copywriter.

Why do I need a copywriter?

That's easy. A copywriter will be able to write copy that is:

  • Appealing to your customers. They will write in your company's tone and make sure to include only the information your target audience wants to know. This will result in clicks and leads.

Oh, you want more? You got it. A copywriter will write copy that is:

  • Visible in search engines – watch your organic traffic rise.

  • Compelling – most copy will require a reader to take action and a copywriter knows how to achieve this.

  • Easy to understand – no jargon, no waffle. Trust me; it makes it much easier for your customers to understand what you do and why they should engage with you.

  • A good return on investment. Quality website copywriting will bring targeted traffic to your website and convert your site visitors into sales.

If you're still uncertain about hiring a copywriter, remember this: they know what works, and just as importantly, what doesn't work. They understand how your business, whatever sector it may be in, can get the most from its copy. Use their experience to benefit your business.
